Designing a new bathroom? Looking to renovate? Whether you're building a new home or remodeling an existing bath, consider adding a freestanding bathroom vanity when you want to create a truly stunning bathroom. These bathroom vanities mimic the look of freestanding furniture, but offer the same storage and plumbing benefits as traditional vanities.

Benefits of freestanding vanities

There are many reasons why freestanding vanities work well in bathrooms, so if you are considering whether to use this option, you can expect some of the following benefits.

Expanded sense of space

Especially in a small bathroom, a freestanding bathroom vanity can help expand the sense of space by leaving a clear site line underneath the vanity.

Personalized look

Freestanding bathroom components can mimic the look of furniture - and can even be made from actual furniture. Match the rest of your home's style by choosing a style that suits your tastes.

Cheaper cost

Despite being fully finished furniture, freestanding vanities are actually more economical than built-in options. They are often prefabricated and portable, so you can take them with you even when you're on the move.

Versatility

Freestanding dressers come in a variety of sizes, colors and designs. Whether you use a small white cabinet or a large vanity that looks like solid wood, you can easily find an option that suits your tastes.

How to install a new vanity

If you plan to install your new vanity yourself, here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process. Take the time to perform each step carefully to ensure that the installation is performed correctly.

Turn off the water. First things first. When installing a new dresser, use a pipe and wrench to turn off the water supply to minimize water spray everywhere. You may have a shut-off valve under the sink, but if you can't figure it out, you can also turn off the water supply to the entire house.

Remove the old vanity. In the case of a bathroom remodel, you'll need to remove the old vanity before installing the new one. You may have to do this in sections, especially if the vanity is large, if it has a tile backsplash, etc. Consider whether you want to keep the old dresser - for example, reuse it or sell it - or whether you just want to get rid of it. If it's going to be discarded, you'll feel a little freer to be rough on it when you take it away.

Prepare the area. Once the old dresser is gone, check the walls and flooring left behind. Is there anything damaged or unfinished? If so, take the time to patch the walls and/or paint as needed.

Mark the location of the installation. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark the location of the new dresser on the wall so you know where to install it.

Install the dresser. To install your dresser, set it in its new location and attach it to the wall studs using the appropriate length of screws for the dresser.

Put in the new dresser. Your next step is to add the top of your new dresser. Start by placing 3/8" of silicone caulk on the top of your base, or along the walls if your top is going to border the walls on either side.

Put in the sink and faucet. Install your new faucet and sink and drain at the top of the sink. Your faucet may come with installation instructions to help you with this step.

Connect the pipes. Because this step is a bit tricky, you may want to seek professional help. However, no matter who reconnects the pipe, it's important to connect it properly so that water can flow in and out of the sink.
